Psa 59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me.
How often, I wonder, do we fight our battles on our own? Life often is a battle as much as we might like to think otherwise. The apostle Paul knew that when he wrote in Ephesians chapter 6, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (v.12) He recognized it was often a struggle but it is a struggle against evil and against darkness which may come directly from the enemy in unpleasant situations, or indirectly through other people who are simply plain nasty!
It has been said that a sign of spiritual maturity is how fast we turn to God, either when we get it wrong or when we get into trouble. This psalm is David responding when Saul sent people to watch out for David and kill him, so this was a very real life-threatening situation. What was David's response? Was it to run away, or was it to try and over come by his own strength? No, it was neither of these; it was to call on the Lord for the Lord to deliver him. This wasn't a cop-out; this was a very real recognition that those the Lord sorted remained sorted, which was much better than he could do. Do we realise this, that the Lord does things better than we can and therefore if we try to do what He can do so much better, we are opting for second best. Why do that when the Lord is waiting to step in on behalf of His children? Hand it over to Him!
