Josh 15:19 She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
This is Caleb's daughter during the time of the settling of the Promised Land. Caleb is an old man having been only one of two men over the age of twenty that God had spared when their generation had originally failed to enter the Land. Now, some forty years later, they are in the Land and land had been parceled out. Caleb's daughter and her husband had been given this area of land in the south, but there were limitations to it: it was limited as to water. Water, of course, is a vital commodity for life. Her husband realised this and prompted her to ask her father for wells to provide the water they needed for an abundant life.
There is a simple analogy here for us today. We have an inheritance from the Lord as Christians. Our ‘land' is our experience of His rule in, through and around us, His blessing on our lives. Now in the same way that physical water is essential for physical life, so the Holy Spirit (often pictured as water) is essential for spiritual life. He indwells us when we become Christians but we need to know His fullness if we are to experience all of our inheritance. We need to be able to ‘cultivate' this ‘land' and be fruitful and we cannot be that without spiritual water in abundance. Caleb's daughter did not hesitate asking her father. She had confidence in his love for her. We too should not hesitate asking our heavenly Father for the fullness of His Spirit, confident in His love (Lk 11:11 -13)
