Isa 2:22 Stop trusting in man, who has but a breath in his nostrils. Of what account is he?
We saw briefly yesterday the picture of the redeemed host in heaven, there because of their trust in the death of the Lamb of God. These are people who have given up relying upon their own endeavours to be good, or to win God's approval. These people know that that is impossible.
Isaiah gives a simple warning. He has been speaking about a coming day of judgement: “The LORD Almighty has a day in store.” (v.12) and on that day, “The arrogance of man will be brought low and the pride of men humbled” (v.17). It will be a day when there will be a sorting out, and all those who reject God and rely upon their own efforts at life, will come under judgement. At the end of this prophetic warning comes today's call – don't trust in man; instead (implied) trust in God alone for your life and your future and your salvation.
It is a call that is all-embracing. It isn't only about salvation seen as a one-off act, but it is a call to have this as a general attitude and approach to life that we each need to maintain throughout our lives. The prophetic context clearly indicates that trust in man is equated with trust in man's godless and unrighteous approaches to life. Trust in this and life will go wrong and future judgment will be yours. No, instead the call is to trust entirely in the Lord for your eternal salvation and for your daily living. May it be so!
