Daily Thoughts : January 20th |
Rom 7:6 we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
The Old Testament saints focused on the law of God. That was their guide line, the thing they kept to if they were wanting to live godly and righteous lives. Then Jeremiah prophesied. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD . "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts." (Jer 31:33) How was the law going to be internalized? It came when, on the day of Pentecost, the Lord poured out His Spirit on His church and from then on every believer became a temple of the Holy Spirit (e.g. 1 Cor 3:16).
Thus today we live and serve as people of the Spirit, those who are indwelt by the Spirit, taught by the Spirit, led by the Spirit, empowered by the Spirit. It's a new way, a Spirit way that we live today.
Prior to coming to Christ we were, as Paul said just before today's verse, controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law .at work in our bodies, (v.5). That means we led self-centred lives doing just what we desired for our own pleasure, which brought spiritual death. Now we live Spirit-led lives in this new way, focused on God instead of self, receiving His guidance and direction which not only leads us in service but leads us in the best way to live, so we are blessed. The Spirit way brings life and health and peace. Hallelujah!
