Lk 22:20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
Jeremiah had prophesied, “The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel” (Jer 31:31). He continued, “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.” (v.33) Jesus was the one to bring in that new covenant, that new agreement with the Lord.
This new covenant is established by Jesus own blood. Lot's of people don't like this idea, but it just means that Jesus gave his life in place of yours and by so doing God agreed a new contract with whoever will receive it: believe that Jesus has died in your place, for your sin and guilt and punishment, and come to God surrendering your life to Him, and He will grant you a brand new Spirit-empowered life as an adopted child of God with all the rights and blessings that go with that!
It's rather like getting married. You stand at the front of a church and say those all important words, “I do” and you are pronounced man and wife. You've entered into a life-long contract with each other to love and be there for one another. When you come to Christ you say those all important words, “Please forgive me on the basis of what you did for me at Calvary” and a contract, agreement or covenant is immediately in operation.
