Daily Thoughts : December 4th |
Isa 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Now if the thought of Almighty God coming to earth in a human form, the form of a baby, wasn't difficult enough to take in, the prophetic descriptions of this baby are just as bad.
First of all he is going to be a ruler. Well that is easy to understand. Then he is going to be called ‘Wonderful Counsellor'. Wow! He is going to be a therapist? Then he is going to be called, ‘Mighty God'. Mighty God? Hold on, this baby is going to be called Mighty God? How can that be? That defeated the scholars for centuries. How could this baby be God? But there seems no mistake: ‘Everlasting Father', that surely refers to God. And Prince of Peace? I don't know! That surely must have been how the people of the Old Testament period must have wondered about this prophecy. Perhaps Isaiah has got it wrong? I mean, just think about it, a child that is going to be God! How can God be contained in a baby?
And today it is no less of a problem for our finite minds. We still can't really cope with it. All we can say is, “All right; if God said it, then it must be.” For those of us who like to have everything neatly packaged it really is a problem, but we're not supposed to understand everything, just accept that what God says is true!
